James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Sam Smith, Sting, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Tim McGraw, Seal, Josh Groban, Hozier, Laufey, and Bob Dylan all sang duets on the album, which was produced by Peter Asher and Walter Afanasieff. It was announced on November 7, 2025 that “The Secret of Life” has been nominated for a Grammy in the
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category.

Peter Asher, Susanna Hoffs, Elvis Costello, and Keith Putney in Malibu at the "Deep End' recording sessions. The Hoffs/Costello duet "Connection" from the sessions was released as a stand alone single in 2024.
Preproduction for this album began in 2021 with extensive song selection at Peter's home in Malibu. The original list of over 100 songs was culled down to 25 or so. 13 songs were released on the album. Susanna said of the lead single, "Under My Thumb" "It was exhilarating to give it a new spin, to flip it on its head, or on its ass. It's a sassy, irreverent song, so it was extremely pleasurable to turn the tables."
CNN asked Susanna to contribute to their 4th of July Music special in 2021, so Peter Asher produced and played on these versions of "Eternal Flame" and "Manic Monday", so they were the first completed tracks for the sessions. They were filmed and recorded at Village Recorders in Los Angeles.
